SUMMARY

On a Monday morning, Swaminathan was unwilling to go to school. He pretended that he had a headache. While his affectionate mother I was lenient, his father was very strict.

So Swami took another tactics and pleaded he could not go to school so late and falsely accused his teacher Samuel of being a very angry man who would scold him severely if he was late in the class. His father seemed somewhat convinced. Swami had thought his father would see his point for avoiding school that day.

But unexpectedly his father wrote a letter apparently about Samuel and asked Swami to go to school and give the letter to the headmaster before entering his class. Swami began to feel really bad. He now began to think over the teacher again. His conscience pricked him that Samuel was not a bad man at all. He felt guilty as it was because of him that his father had written a long letter about Samuel. He felt much grieved for his teacher.

As Swami entered the school he planned to deliver the letter to the headmaster after সে the school hours. For, by then, he might have a chance to judge Samuel and see if the letter was justified. But Samuel was very nice to him. Neither did he scold Swami for coming late, nor was he angry with Swami even when he could not produce his homework. Moreover, he appreciated the attitude of Swami's father against absenting from school. All this made Swami forget his reservations about the teacher | and love him more than ever. Still, to be true to his father, Swami went to the headmaster's room after school hours. He found to his relief, that the headmaster had gone on leave for a week. his return, however, his father took the undelivered letter from his hand and tore it up, commenting that he knew Swami would not deliver the letter.

এক সোমবার সকালে স্বামীনাথনের স্কুলে যেতে ইচ্ছে করছিল না। সে ভান করল যে, তার মাথা ধরেছে। তার স্নেহময়ী মা উদার হলেও, তার বাবা ছিলেন খুব কড়া।

স্বামী তাই আর একটি কৌশল নিল। সে জানাল সে এত | দেরিতে স্কুলে যেতে পারবে না এবং তার শিক্ষক স্যামুয়েলের নামে মিথ্যে অভিযোগ করে বলল তিনি খুব রাগী মানুষ এবং দেরিতে গেলে ভয়ংকর বকবেন। বাবা তার কথাটি কিছুটা বিশ্বাস করলেন বলে মনে হল। স্বামী ভেবেছিল যে, তার বাবা স্কুলে না-যাওয়ার কারণটি বুঝতে পারবেন এবং সেদিনের মতো ছাড় দেবেন।

স্কুলে যেতে ও ক্লাসে ঢোকার আগে চিঠিটি প্রধানশিক্ষকের হাতে দিতে বললেন। স্বামীর এবার সত্যিই খারাপ লাগছিল। শিক্ষক সম্বন্ধে আবার ভাবতে লাগল। তার বিবেক বলল, শিক্ষক স্যামুয়েল আদৌ খারাপ মানুষ নন। নিজেকে অপরাধী বলে মনে হল, কারণ তার কারণেই বাবা শিক্ষক স্যামুয়েলের বিষয়ে একটি দীর্ঘ চিঠি লিখেছেন। সে তার শিক্ষকের জন্য খুবই দুঃখ বোধ করল। স্বামী স্কুলে ঢোকার সময় ঠিক করল যে, প্রধানশিক্ষককে চিঠিটি স্কুল শেষ হলে দেবে। কারণ তাহলে সে ইতিমধ্যে স্যামুয়েলকে বিচার করে দেখার একটি সুযোগ পাবে যে, চিঠিটি দেওয়া যুক্তিযুক্ত হবে কি না। কিন্তু শিক্ষক স্যামুয়েল তার সঙ্গে সুন্দর আচরণ করলেন। দেরিতে আসার জন্য তিনি তাকে বকলেন না, এমনকি সে যখন বাড়ির-কাজ দিতে পারল না তখনও তাকে বকলেন না। তদুপরি, তিনি স্কুলে অনুপস্থিত থাকার বিরুদ্ধে তার বাবার মতকে প্রশংসাও করলেন। এইসব ঘটনার ফলে স্বামী তার শিক্ষকের সম্বন্ধে তার পূর্বধারণা ভুলে গেল, এবং তাঁকে আরও বেশি ভালোবাসতে লাগল। তথাপি, বাবার সঙ্গে সত্যাচরণ করার জন্য সে স্কুল-শেষে প্রধানশিক্ষক মহাশয়ের ঘরে গেল। সে | শুনে স্বস্তি পেল যে, তিনি এক সপ্তাহের ছুটি নিয়েছেন। অবশ্য, বাড়ি ফেরার পর বাবা তার কাছ থেকে না-দেওয়া | চিঠিটি কেড়ে নিয়ে ছিঁড়ে ফেললেন, সঙ্গে মন্তব্য করলেন যে, তিনি জানতেন স্বামী চিঠিটি দেবে না।

It is high time for the drastic steps to be taken to stop reckless driving of public vehicles. The speed with which vehicles are now driven is a positive threat to commuters as well as pedestrians. Narrow roads, irregular service, jam-packed passengers cause untold sufferings to commuters. That apart, just for more profits leads the staff of vehicles to frequent halt, late running and lastly, to reckless driving without caring for tensions and accidents. Traffic rules go unheeded and incidents of these kinds occur almost daily.

In this condition, I appeal to the authorities concerned to put an immediate stop to rash driving of public vehicles and thereby relieve the commuters' woes.

1.. What step did Swami's father take to help him? How would it help Swami?

Ans:

To help Swami, his father composed a long letter to the headmaster about Samuel's treatment with the students and said Swami to give it to the headmaster and then to go to his class.

It was, perhaps, his idea that the headmaster would read the letter andadvise Samuel not to be so rude to the students. This would help attend Samuel's classes without fear in future..

Ans:

The turn was that Swami's father suddenly proposed to send a letter with his son to the headmaster, and handed it to him headm aster before going to his class.

His father's sudden proposal seemed unexpected to Swami. The boy thought that he had been able to make his father feel why his son should avoid school for that day and therefore not ask him to go to school so late.

Ans : As Swami went to school with the letter, he felt himself to be the worst boy on earth. His conscience was biting him that he had not described Samuel accurately before his father. Ans:

Stopping on the roadside Swami thought about Samuel once again. He realised that Samuel was not a bad man after all, and as a person he was much more friendly than other teachers. He also felt that Samuel had a special liking for him. His attitude changed considerably and he had a guilty feeling for what he said about him to his father.

Ans:

When Swami stood at the door of the classroom, Samuel was teaching arithmetic. He looked up at Swami. He only said that Swami was half an hour late, but did not scold him. When he learnt Swami had a headache, he simply said he should not have come then. He also appreciated his father's view about attending school. Even when Swami said he could not do his homework, tSamuel was not angry. In all, Swami found Samuel to be very gentle that day.
